DIt, BIt, FIt, LIt, TIt at SoFlSciMuse

The South Florida Science Museum and the Florida Engineering Society presented the annual engineering competition Drop It, Build It, Fly It, Launch It, Thrill It on Saturday, April 24, 2010. DiBiFiLiTi challenges students to build an unbreakable bridge, create a container to protect an egg from a 3-story drop, design the most aerodynamic paper airplane, blast off the ultimate water bottle rocket, and, NEW this year, construct an operational model roller coaster. Click here for more details. Hawk physics students from Seminole Ridge High School showcased their skills in “Drop It,” “Fly It” and “Thrill It.” Fizzix!

Drop It tests student-built packages to protect a raw egg from cracking after a 50-foot free-fall, provided by FPL from the bucket of a manlift. Science teacher Erich Landstrom is proud of Patrick Costan, Brian Harner, Arnold Banner, and Jikiya Moore.

In Build It, students create a model coaster with the longest ride time (with bonus points awarded for loops). Judges also grade on the attraction of the attraction, how well the ride's theme is executed. Mr Landstrom is proud of Matthew Schulz and Jospeh Pavicic for their "War" machine.

Congratulations to junior Andrew Piroli for winning third place in the "Thrill It" category! His "Pipe World" creation has a ride time of 15.2 seconds and a ride theme based on Mario Brothers.
