Hawk Alumni Return to the Engineering Eyrie

Seminole Ridge High School hosted its annual alumni panel for current Seminole Ridge SECME students, in which former Hawks shared their thoughts on college and on life after high school.

The wide ranging talk covered from first day to financial aid, from meal plans to majoring in math. Cindy Nicole Dosch (Class of 2011), an accounting major at UF, and Caitlin Nicole Miller (Class of 2012), an engineering major at FAU, returned to their alma mater during their spring break to speak with Seminole SECME for an hour.

“Many seniors found the event helpful and appreciated the alumni sharing their college experiences,” guidance coordinator Sandy Baldwin said.

Hawk Senior Wins Tech Service Scholarship

Congratulations to Hawk tech support student Mitchell Lafferty (photo, left). Mitch is on the VEX robotics team and is the winner of the Palm Beach County school district’s 2013 Pat Oliphant Memorial Student Technology Service Scholarship. Lafferty will receive the $500.00 award at the May 15 school board meeting.

SECME Announces 2012 Master Teacher Mentors

Eleven outstanding educators from across the country asked to lead SECME initiatives.
For over thirty years a major focus of SECME, Inc. (a national nonprofit formerly the Southeastern Consortium of Minorities in Engineering) has been teacher professional development focused on K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). SECME’s capstone event for the professional renewal and revitalization is the Annual Summer Institute, hosted each year by one of its 42 member engineering universities. This year the 36th Annual SECME Summer Institute will be hosted by The University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, June 24-July 1. This intense eight-day residential professional development opportunity, presented by member university faculty, partner industry and government experts, and SECME Master Teachers, provides educators with curriculum activities aligned to National Standards, cutting-edge content knowledge, and a framework for implementing a SECME program.

The following eleven educators are significant members of SECME’s cadre of teachers with a strong tradition of leadership in SECME’s National Office Education Program Division. Because of their noteworthy contributions over the years, this group has been asked to accept additional responsibilities by serving on the SECME National Advisory Council and as SECME Summer Institute Master Teacher Mentors. The focus of the SECME Mentoring program is to enhance K-12 teaching and learning by leading Professional Learning Communities during the Summer Institute and then providing Institute participants with post-Institute support.

SECME was founded in 1975 by the Engineering Deans from seven Southeastern universities: Alabama, Florida, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Tennessee, Tennessee State, and Tuskegee. Today SECME is a non-profit alliance that extends to 40 school systems, 39 major engineering universities, and industries and agencies in 15 states, the District of Columbia, and Grand Bahamas. SECME's mission is to increase the pool of historically under-represented and under-served students who will be prepared to enter and complete post-secondary studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), thus creating a diverse and globally competitive workforce. SECME provides teacher professional development and coordinates student competitions across the country. Its National Headquarters is housed on the campus of The Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.

SECME Helped Her Plan It. SECME Helps Her Live It!

SECME: Plan It - Build It - Live It!

I want to unlock the keys to the Universe, answer seemingly impossible questions, discover innovations, and so much more. As a kid I’ve always strived to understand the mechanics of everything around me. I constantly asked questions, rattling my other’s minds for the countless things I wondered- “Why is the sky blue? How do birds fly? How did people float on the moon?” It was all so mysterious to me.

When I started school I was relieved because my curiosity was finally beginning to be quenched. Little did I know my mind had only just started growing and soon enough every answer led me to a new question and more observations. I noticed that while other kids were occupied by their games, dolls, and action figures, I was out catching caterpillars and trying to make them turn into butterflies or trying to make new games to play and toys to play with. Even that was not enough for my wandering mind.

It wasn’t until my Junior year that I had found the perfect way to “STEMulate” my mind. It was that booming voice coming from one of my crazy new science teachers that led me to one of my favorite hobbies today. “Have fun! Get Smart! Win Prizes!”- that was the phrase that drew me in.

Seminole Ridge 2011 Pathfinder Nominees

Seminole Ridge High School is pleased to announce the 2012 Palm Beach Post Pathfinder Scholarship nominees. Students are nominated in 18 academic, vocational, and athletic categories and ddemonstrate outstanding achievement. The following Pathfinder nominees have also participated in Seminole SECME (or if not in SECME, have been science students of Seminole Ridge SECME school coordinator Mr. Landstrom and have been in a SECME-tized classroom)

Again, congratulations to our Seminole Ridge Seniors who have been nominated for this prestigious award. Please wish them luck and encouragement as they continue through the nomination process.

Seminole SECME Spotlight: Caitlin Nicole Miller

Senior Caitlin Nicole Miller is the captain of this year’s Seminole SECME team. She is setting a standard for the theme “Plan It—Build It—Live It!” Last year she was a part of the Seminole SECME Brain Bowl team. Her decision to enrich her education was immediately noticed. Her classmates talked about how committed she was, displaying her dedication and great intelligence at every meeting. She felt like she could make a difference in the club and be a great leader when offered the position as captain. Her priorities were organization and focusing in a more systematic way of doing things. Caitlin has a hands-on approach: she checks in with everybody and makes sure she knows her stuff so her teammates get the best advice she can give. That’s no surprise given how she spends her time off from school and SECME. She said, “I’ve always been good at math. And the hands-on science stuff — I’ve always liked knowing why things happen and how things work.” Caitlin enjoys watching “CSI” and “Lie to Me” because “I like how they go about solving crimes and I like guessing how the show is going to end. I do that all the time.” Caitlin’s plans for the future look for fall admission to the College of Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. Watch this Hawk become an Owl!

SECME Spotlight UPDATE: Kayla Permenter

The Seminole SECME spotlight shone on Kayla Permenter one year ago. This morning an update came on her.

Kayla passed her FE exam and is now nationally certified engineer. And she can place E.I. behind her name, as this summer she has an engineering internship with Archer Western in Tampa. She did her first pour this pass Sunday and everything went great. She is really loving her job. On Monday she was 217 feet up in the air on the bridge and on Tuesday she was down in the column checking the rebar getting prepared for the pour on a bridge on I-4.

The $389.5- million Interstate 4/Crosstown Connector in Tampa is a joint venture of PCL Civil Constructors of Tampa and Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta. PBS&J of Tampa is the project’s engineer. The project involves constructing multiple, elevated, one and two-lane ramps that will connect I-4 and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. The ramps will merge at one section into a 12-lane, tolled roadway that will also add designated truck ramps for improved access to the Port of Tampa. The project consists of 23 bridges, 12 of which are segmental and will entail both “span-by span” and balanced cantilever construction methods. Other work includes rehabilitation of existing I-4 bridges and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway and roadway and approach tie-ins. Construction is expected to proceed over a 36-month timeline.

2010-2011 SECME Outstanding Student of the Year for Palm Beach County, FL (High School division): Miss Cindy Dosch

The South Florida SECME Industry Partners for Education has recognized Seminole Ridge biotechnology academy senior Cindy Dosch as the Palm Beach County 2010-2011 SECME Outstanding High School Student of the Year. Dosch will attend University of Florida in the fall to earn her degree in Mathematics. Cindy is in top five percent of this year’s senior class, is a member of the National Science Honor Society, and was the Seminole Ridge nominee for the Pathfinder High School Scholarship award for outstanding achievement in Science. Dosch was honored on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at the 17th annual Celebration of Achievement banquet in Boca Raton. This will be the third consecutive year Seminole Ridge High has the Outstanding SECME student of the year (prior winners: 2009: Kaitlin Kilpatrick, 2010: Shelby Weininger).

Says Dosch of SECME: “The theme, “Igniting Minds Through STEM Education,” is so much more than a simple phrase to me; it’s really a description of what happened to my mind this year because of SECME. I honestly like this club because it has so much to offer. Not only does one get to see the science in action and have the opportunity to truly comprehend it, it provides opportunity in other fields such as art.” Cindy was captain of the 2010-2011 Seminole SECME team, overseeing our overall Olympiad submissions. She first joined Seminole SECME in SY2009-2010, as a part of our banner team whose submission won 2nd place. This year, Cindy contributed to many teams.

Fandrey was selected as the Outstanding SECME student of Seminole Ridge. AJ has been a club member for the past two years. Last year, he joined our mousetrap vehicle (MTV) team. His hard work, attention to details, and persistence helped Seminole Ridge SECME win 3rd place in the MTV competition at the Olympiad, which in turned helped the team win 2nd place overall for the district. This year, he took responsibility for leading a team of freshmen for their MTV submission. His supervision style was a firm hand with a light touch. He helped provide continuity among changing attendance, and as a multiyear participant gave the insight only a veteran can provide.

Did you know that you can now read about the district’s high school-nominated Successful Black High School Males, like Seminole Ridge's Brian Bartles? The Council of the Great City Schools, a national education organization, asked the nation’s sixty largest school systems to send information about successful Black males in our schools. We asked the high schools, they responded and we decided to make it a Palm Beach County School District project to recognize our own students. Learn about these remarkable student role models, their outstanding high school accomplishments and their expectations for college and careers. Go to the district’s Web page, www.palmbeachschools.org and click on the Black History Month Banner that will take you to the African and African American Studies Web page and then click on Successful Black Males located on the right side of the Web page.
