LCBC: The Next Generation

VEX team 1614 (go Underdogs!) at Seminole Ridge SECME. During this lesson in robotics they investigate the concepts underlying energy transfer; and through experiments they build an understanding of the relationships between forces and motion. It include demonstrations and hands-on experience examining electrical and kinetic energy, power, DC motors, torque, traction, fritction, simple machines, levers and gears, chains and sprockets , etc. In mathematics, students apply an understanding of ratio and proportion as they explore the relationship between gear ratios and the radius of a wheel.

SAE AWIM JetToy Challenge

View the photos and videos of the Seminole SECME student solutions to the SAE AWIM JetToy Challenge on September 7th. Students make balloon-powered toy cars that meet specific performance criteria (like travels far). Propulsion, friction, air resistance and design are the core scientific concepts students explore in this challenge.

SAE AWIM Skimmer

Skimmer
Students construct paper sailboats and test the effect of different sail shapes, sizes, and construction methods to meet specific performance criteria. Friction, forces, the effect of surface area and design are some of the physical phenomena students encounter in this challenge.

Students join a design team and, with their team, build a skimmer in three steps.

Congratulations to Matt Schulz, Brandy Milano, Zack Wallace and Ryan Hamilton. In the Motorized Toy Car challenge, Team Trojan designed an electric gear driven toy capable of driving up a 5 inch long ramp with an incline of 30 degrees. Force and friction, simple machines, levers and gears, torque and design are the core scientific concepts covered in this challenge.
SAE A World In Motion Motorized Toy Car Challenge
The SAE A World In Motion program has been working with SECME for years in providing educators STEM education. At the SECME Summer 2009 Institute in Florida, A World In Motion program developer Ken Francis presented all of the AWIM challenges. The SECME Summer Institute provides educators, administrators, parents and students innovative STEM Educational programs and professional development.

SAE A World in Motion: Motorized Toy Car

The SAE A World In Motion program brings science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to life right in the classroom. In the Motorized Toy Car challenge students develop new designs for electric gear driven toys. The students are involved in writing proposals, drawing sketches, and working with models to develop a plan to meet a specific set of design requirements. Force and friction, simple machines, levers and gears, torque and design are the core scientific concepts covered in this challenge.

The SAE A World In Motion program has been working with SECME for years in providing educators STEM education. Educators from across the country gathered at the SECME Summer Institute from June 22-28th in Daytona Beach, Florida. A World In Motion program developer Ken Francis presented all of the AWIM challenges including the popular JetToy car and the new Fuel Cell Challenge. The SECME Summer Institute provides educators, administrators, parents and students innovative STEM Educational programs and professional development.

SECME, which was established in 1975 by the Engineering Deans at seven Southeastern universities, now extends to schools, universities, and industries in 17 states.

AWIM - Glider Challenge

SAE A World In Motion - Glider Challenge

Alix
SAE International's A World In Motion® (AWIM) is a teacher-administered, industry volunteer-assisted program that brings science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to life in the classroom for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Benchmarked to the national standards, AWIM incorporates the laws of physics, motion, flight and electronics into age-appropriate hands on activities that reinforce classroom STEM curriculum.
Aleen
Students explore the relationship between force and motion.
Alyssa
Students explore the effects of weight and lift on a glider.
Brittany
Students learn the relationships between data analysis and variable manipulations.

Students learn the importance of understanding consumer demands.
Yikes
Through the support of corporations, foundations, volunteers, SAE members and the SAE Foundation, A World In Motion opens a window of possibilities for students as they discover the exciting application of science principles and learn about rewarding engineering, science and technical careers. The students learn to work as a team with their classmates and apply creative problem solving during the activities. GO HAWKS!
